Our Story

How it all started...

Shady Acres Baptist Church was founded over 100 years ago in the edge of a neighborhood called, “The Heights”. The first church was located at 2104 Bevis in Houston, Texas.

1974

Jack Wood was called to be pastor.

1985

The church began to grow. After remodeling the building several times, it was decided the church should move to a larger facility. The church bought Inwood Baptist Church on 7330 Vogel Road. It was not very long until the new church building on Vogel began to fill up; so for several years, Bro. Wood gathered the men on Saturday night to pray for the corner lot that was next to us. After praying and dealing with the owner of property, God gave us a green light. We bought that property and soon started building an even bigger building on the corner of Victory and Vogel. Because Pastor Wood had a desire to build the building debt free, it took seven years to complete the project.

1992

Bro. Wood had to have open-heart surgery. The next year, he developed diabetes.

1995

Bro. Wood resigned and the church called Bro. Danny Farley (his son-in-law) to be their pastor. Missions was always Bro. Wood's heartbeat. He taught us all to love missions and to give until it hurt. Millions of dollars have gone to foreign fields from this church. It continues to be our main objective.

1998

Brother Wood traveled for several years until he became very ill and passed away November 12, 1998. Brad Witbracht was saved in 1998 in Portland, Oregon.

2020

God called Bro. Brad Witbracht and his family to come serve at Shady Acres.

2021

Our church fulfilled Bro. Wood’s dream of giving over $1,000,000.00 to missions in a fiscal year. We had pledged around $800,000 in Faith Promise but gave over one million in actual giving.

2024

On Sunday, January 21, 2024, Pastor Farley resigned and turned the church over to Pastor Brad Witbracht. Bro. Farley continues to be an assistant and member of our church.
